Too often a picture is painted in connection with the 12 women of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which shows a huge harem which the Prophet had established out of greed and lust. These can only be drawn by laymen who do not question nor revise the imagination because the truth looks totally different: |
The wife’s of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in researched short reports mainly base on the Book of Faruk El-Zayat "mothers of the believers" but also on Ibn Ishaq's "The life of the Prophet" and Prof. Zekai Konrapas "Muhammed El Emin". Those here presented short biographies of the women are only showing a summary of the most important events and characterize their relationship to Muhammad and do not claim to be complete. Especial variation occurred concerning the ages of the women. Some sources speak of women who were nearly 100 years old other speak of 9 years old. Concerning the ages of the women the more liberate source was taken. Only Allah knows the truth. |
Still by these short biographies it can be shown a family life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which is not being ruled by animalistic lust but more by patience, responsibility, love and prevision. |
| What are the most important results of this research? | |||
| 1. The prophet (peace be upon him) was not married with al 12 wives at once. In contrary: The first marriage was a pure monogamy with Khadija, which went from his 25th year until her death. There is a chronological line which shows his marriages during his life. | |||
2. The marriages after were all celebrated in Medina in a time which demanded from Muhammad (peace be upon him) not the private man but more the muslim role model and the head of the community. That is why many marriages were less based on love and lust but more on piece, protection and responsibility. |
3. The prophet (peace be upon him) married many widows whose men were killed on the battlefield to give them provision and protection and to be a role model to his companion by his action. That is why man learned men interpret the Verses concerning polygamy in the Quran in that way, that they are only concerning wartimes to prevent widows and orphans from poverty. |
4. Some women were war prisoners which were freed by the marriage with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and therefore this behavior was also a role model to other Muslims. Beside this the marriages often based a foundation of peace between two tribes which were at war before and therefore now had peace and harmony in their region. |
5. Muhammad (peace be upon him) married kinsman like women but also women from foreign religions and tribes. |
6. He married women of regardless of the age, status or other kind. He could not afford it not to agree into a marriage which was offered him because Muslims of that time as well as today would have searched for a reason and then generalized which women were not allowed to be marriage. His live is still a role model for Muslims. An exclusion of a woman would have meant consequences for all women in a similar situation. Still many Muslims believe that only a virgin from their own nationality is allowed to be married. A step back into old tradition which the prophet fought a lifetime and excluded by his own behavior. |

7. For the Prophet it was not easy to solve the fractionation and the jealousy amongst his women. Sometimes he separated from one or from all when he saw no other possibility. But in his revelations Allah criticized him and his wives for this behavior and ordered him to take her/them back. Marriage with many women at the same time is surly not easy because they all had to be treated just and equal. As Prophet, Muhammad had to face this special challenge for the benefit of the later generations of women. Some man already despairs with the marriage with one wife. |
8. Every woman had her special part concerning the rights and duties for the women today. They took care for believe and the community and took their part in carrying in wartimes and in the preservation and spreading of Islam. One can find a suitable role model in every woman of the Prophet. |
9. They reported detailed information of the private life of the Prophet. Even most private aspects were reported. By this a picture was presented which show a Mann helping in the house who also was patient and loving, who never raised his hand in violence against women or child, who pardoned little mistakes generously, who cried at the lost of loved ones and who tried to be just to all women. |
That is the role model which every man should try to follow! |
